What do the fineness levels Superfino, Fino, Fino regular mean? - TomHats

What do the fineness levels Superfino, Fino, Fino regular mean?

There are no standardized terms for the degree of purity of the Panama hat. Each manufacturer or seller can divide the quality of their hats into categories and give them names or designations as they wish. It is therefore not surprising that one supplier uses the name "Fino" to mean a finely woven Panama hat, while another sells a lower quality hat under the same name. The braid numbers are crucial for determining quality.

What do the terms Subfino, Fino regular, Superfino etc. mean for us?

Our idea was to incorporate the customs of the hat weavers. This can be seen particularly in the “Fino fino” category. The people here on the coast of Ecuador have their own way of expressing an increase. Instead of saying something is very small, say small small. Therefore fino fino (fine fine) instead of very fine.

How do you determine the fineness of a Montecristi Panama hat?

The level of fineness within a hat can vary greatly. For example, the brim is never as finely braided as other parts of the hat. The degree of braiding is measured horizontally in the upper third of the crown of the hat - counting the braids within one inch (2.54 cm). It is best to measure all around at the same height several times to get an average value. Doing this with a standard ruler can be very difficult or even misleading - especially with very fine hats. That's why we use a special magnifying glass like the one shown in the photo above. However, it should be noted that these are only guidelines. A hat offered with 24 braids per inch may also be 23 or 25 inches. Each hat is a masterpiece of Ecuadorian craftsmanship. That's what makes him so unique. Slight differences are not a quality defect but rather prove the authenticity of the hat.

Our braiding classification is as follows:

  1. Subfino - approx. 12 weaves per inch
  2. Fino regular - approx. 15 weaves per inch
  3. Fino - approx. 18 weaves per inch
  4. Fino fino - approx. 21 weaves per inch
  5. Superfino - approx. 24 weaves per inch
  6. Ultrafine - 30 or more weaves per inch

In summary, it can be said that many factors determine the quality and price of a Panama hat - not just the degree of fineness. Fineness, color, weave pattern and overall appearance together determine price and quality.
